Auto accident about one mile south of Oak Springs Summit, on Nevada Highway 93
From the Lincoln County Record:
A man and woman, both in their early 20s, died in a one-car rollover early Friday morning, August 21. Lincoln County Sheriff Kerry Lee said there were three adults and two small children, traveling in a 1995 white Chevy Trailblazer going from Idaho to California for a family reunion. The accident occurred at approximately 6 am on U.S. Highway 93, on the south side of the Oak Springs summit, about a mile toward the summit from an asphalt pull over area. All five occupants were ejected from the vehicle and Jesse Navarro-Perez, 23, and Jennifer Nicole Werner, 24, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was Isais Perez, 38, brother of the deceased man. The two children were Caroline Werner-Perez, age 2 and Luicano Perez, age 1. The deceased were the parents of the children.
Nevada Highway Patrol, Lincoln County Sheriff, Panaca Volunteer Ambulance, Caliente Ambulance and Caliente Fire Department all responded to the scene. Lee said the three surviving victims were taken by Life Flight to hospitals in Las Vegas. He said he learned the driver was later released from the Sunrise Hospital and the condition of the two children was listed as stable. The helicopter was able to take one of the victims, while the other two were transported to the Lincoln County Airport in Panaca and flown out by fixed wing aircraft by one of the mercy flight companies in Las Vegas.
Sheriff's deputies reported none of the occupants were wearing seat belts and the children were not fastened in child car seats.
Highway 93 was closed for a time at the scene of the accident, Lee said. Traffic was later rerouted on the shoulder of the highway around the accident scene. Lee said he did not know the cause of the accident. He thought the driver may have overcorrected, lost control and the vehicle then rolled along the highway and came to rest on its wheels a short distance off the highway. Unofficial reports say alcohol may have been a factor in the accident, but Nevada Highway Patrol will make that determination through their continuing investigation.
Lee said the accident occurred very close to a marker that indicates the location of another fatal accident from November 2006, involving a van carrying 10 people.
