Abraham Stouffer was a son of Henry and Magdalena (Hess) Stauffer; grandson of Johannes Stauffer and Kinget Heistand, widow of Michael Risser, to whom he was married in 1685. Johannes was born 1650-1655 at Alzheim on the Rhine, near Zurich, Switzerland.
They were Mennonites and were persecuted by the Zwinglians on account of their faith and driven from their lands. In this strait all the family except the oldest daughter emigrated to America. They left their home Nov. 5, 1709, sailed down the Rhine from Weissennan on Nov 8th, and reached London, Jan 20, 1710, whence they came to America in the spring of the same year. They settled on the Schuylkill River at or near Valley Forge in Chester County.
Johannes father was Daniel Stauffer, a descendant of the ancient House of Hohenstauffen, in Swabia, a generation of knights called Stauffacher, who at the time of the freeing of Switzerland by William Tell, were wealthy farmers and rendered great assistance. He was born at Alzheim or Weissenham, near Zurich, about 1630.
Abraham Stouffer, in the spring of 1792, settled in the vicinity of Chambersburg, Pa., where he purchased several farms and built a flour mill in 1793, the latter was operated by his direct descendants for ninety years and from whom the present village of Stoufferstown received its name.

Jacob Stauffer
M, #20453, b. 1712, d. 1775
Parents
Biography
Jacob Stauffer was born in 1712 in Mückenhäuser Hof or Ibersheim, (now Rhein-Pfalz), Germany. He married
Magdalena Hess, daughter of
Hans Hess and
Magdalena, in 1735. Jacob Stauffer died in 1775 in Donegal Twp., Lancaster Co., PA.
Jacob Stauffer was Mennonite. Occupation: Miller. He immigrated on 21 September 1732 to Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA.
Note:
From Tim Doyle's "Stauffer Genealogy" web site:
(From the Shirk genealogy): In 1735, Jacob (Shirk mistakenly says "Henry", a mistake made in many sources) married Magdelana Hess of the same county; and from this union eleven children were born. Of these we have secured the record of only one son, Abraham, whose descendants form the subject of this Memoranda. There is no existing record for his family except that the issue was three sons and three daughters. In the spring of 1792, he removed to the vicinity of Chambersburg, Franklin county, PA, where many of his descendants reside. In the same year, he, with his two sons-in-law, Metz and Shetter, purchased a tract of land a mile west of Chambersburg from Patrick Vance; also a property adjoining from James Jack, of Chambersburg, in order to secure the water-right for a mill which Stauffer contemplated building. They paid four pounds and ten shillings per acre ($21.78) which at that time was thought to be a most extravagant price. Out of the two tracts of land they made three farms; one for Metz, and one for Shetter; Stauffer keeping the middle tract for the flouring mills, which he built about 1793, and which were operated by his direct descendants for ninety years; and from whom the present village of Stoufferstown received its name. (This latter from records by Abraham Stauffer).
