She was born to Jean and Marguerite Bermont Heleine, French immigrants living near Frankfort Germany. Nancy changed her French family name of Heleine to Halina sometime before her marriage, most likely due to spelling as she heard the name pronounced. Each of her siblings took on a different Americanized version of that original spelling. Her family arrived in Baltimore, Maryland October 1827 after a 4 month voyage from Amsterdam, Holland. After their settling in Washington County, NancyAnn was born near the Cavetown Community North of Hagerstown, Washington, Maryland.
