OBITUARY: Castalia Item October 25, 1904.
Thos Allan Windell was born in Virginia, Oct 24, 1826, and died in Castalia, Oct 21, 1904, lacking only three days of making him 78 years of age. In early childhood he moved from Virginia to Ohio with his parents, where he lived till a young man then going to Indiana, where in Jan. 29, 1852 he was united in marriage to Eveline Jarat, passing their golden wedding nearly two years ago. In the fall of 1853 they came to Iowa and settled in Winneshiek county and have remained residents up to his death. They were among the pioneer residents of this vicinity and saw the country grow to its present improvement. A great many hard knocks, ups and downs, yet with a character spotless and a sincerity that has not been questioned and honesty in all deals is the priceless legacy of pure manhood left to those remaining here. Few men there are that have done the hard work in their life and still in good health up to about a year ago, a few short months of declining illness and then the end. He is the first of the family to die and leave the family circle broken. Eight children were born to them, six sons and two daughters, the youngest of which is 33 years of age. Five of the eight children were present at the funeral. The absent ones are Joseph S. of Portland, Oregon, George L. of Richmond, Wash., and John L. of Seattle, Wash. He leaves behind a large number of friends who all joined in paying their last tribute of respect who had lived among them so long. The funeral services were held Sunday from UB church, Rev. Montgomery officiating, with interment at Universalist cemetery.
Thomas Allen Windell lived in 1850 in Green Twp., Madison Co., IN.

Martha J. Windell, daughter of
Samuel Windell and
Sarah Elizabeth Eustis, on 21 January 1855. David C. Polley died on 24 May 1883 in Correctionville, Woodbury Co., IA,
OBITUARY:
Sioux Valley News, May 31, 1883, page 4: Died in Correctionville May 24, 1883, David C. Polley. He was born in Stamford, Delaware Co, New York, April 18, 1830. Removed to Wisconsin with his parents in 1844, from thence to Winnesheik Co, Iowa in 1854. January 21, 1855, he married Martha J. Windell of Indiana. On the opening of the rebellion his mind and heart could not rest until he had entered the army with his brother Charles to do all in his power for the saving of his country. This was natural for a true American and one of his ancestry, his grandfather having served in the revolutionary army as lieutenant colonel from Rhode Island and his father having gone from New York to engage in the war of 1812. Mr Polley served his country 3 years. At the siege of Atlanta he received an injury which caused him much suffering on his return home. A recent fall so aggravated the wound that his death was quite sudden. He suffered severely on Tuesday and Wednesday and died about noon on Thursday. His physicians and friends were very kind in their services. The wife, though nearly prostrated by the sudden blow, was extremely faithful in her care. Mr. Polley was one of our old residents, having moved to Union Ridge in July 1869 and to the city last fall. He was a hard working man, as one may see by his farm where his son now resides, and one of thoroughly honest and upright character. Funeral services were on Friday conducted by Rev. C.N. Sinnett, assisted by the excellent rendering of hymns by the choir.
