Article from newspaper:
" 'Bounces' bombs, returns safely
Flight Officer Donald A. Faulhaber of Lincoln took part in a recent raid over Frankfurt Germany. He is co-pilot of the Flying Fortress "Round-Tripper" which was able to live up to its name only because the crewmembers bounced "live" bombs, in basketball fashion, off the bomb bay doors of their plane. Faulhaber and his companions found that the only way to free their deadly cargo during a recent mission was to bounce the bombs against the side of a stuck door and thru the half-opened hatch. Thousands of feet over Germany, the fuse of the last bomb broke off. Gambling on the final point -- either being blown to bits, or returning safely -- Faulhaber aimed and won. The unshackled bomb neatly dropped between they doors.
Faulhaber's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Alex L. Faulhaber, 6441 Havelock."
Article from newspaper:
"Lt. D. Faulhaber is awarded DFC
Second Lt. Donald A. Faulhaber, son of Alexander L. Faulhaber, 6441 Havelock ave., was recently awarded the distringuished flying cross at an Eighth air force bomber station for outstanding gallantry while serving as co-pilot on a bombing mission over Germany Feb. 11, 1944. The citation reads:
"For extraordinary achievement while serving as co-pilot on a bombing mission over Germany, February 11, 1944. Upon receiving the signal to prepare for bombing Lieutenant Faulhaber, then flight officer, noticed that the bomb bay doors had not opened and the shackles had jammed. Realizing that the extra load would use more fuel than was planned for on the return flight he voluntarily left his station and with a walk-around oxygen bottle, no parachute and armed with a screw driver he succeeded in loosening the shackles and the bombs dropped onto the warped bomb bay doors forcing them open and releasing the weight on the plane. One of the fuses on a bomb had broken off instantly arming it. Despite the fact that the slightest jar might explode the charge he succeeded in dropping it thru the open doors."
The air medal and three oak leaf clusters to the air medal were recently awarded Lieutenant Faulhaber for "exceptional meritorious achievement" while participating in 20 combat missions over Europe."
Article from the newspaper, Nov 21, 1953:
"Son Born in Japan To Donald Faulhabers
Mr. and Mrs. Alex Faulhber have received news from Japan of the birth of a grandson. The baby's parents are Capt. and Mrs. Donald Faulhaber, and his maternal grandfather is Will Easterling of Clio, Ala.
Mrs. Faulhaber is the former Capt. Elsie Easterling of the Army Nurse Corps. She had served for 11 years at the time of her retirement."
