Biography

Joseph Clippinger was born in 1798 in Shippensburg, Franklin Co., PA. He married Elizabeth about 1820.1 He died after 11 June 1880 in Illinois According to family tradition, Joseph and Elizabeth Clippinger fled west from their Maryland home after the Indian Removal Act was passed in 1830, because her Indian ancestry was widely known there. They followed the National Road west to the end of its then-current construction, which was at Springfield, Ohio. From there they settled on Main Street in New Carlisle and he had his home and gunsmith shop where the Security National Bank building stands today. When she was near 90 years of age (about 1890) Elizabeth wanted to travel west to visit relatives in Illinois and Kansas. Presumably the ones in Kansas, at least, were from her Native American Lenni-Lenapi tribe. When they were in Illinois, Joseph died and was buried -- the location is not known. Elizabeth then proceeded to Kansas and found her kin there. She never returned to Ohio. Her burial location is also not known.

Occupation: a very proficient gunsmith, maker of Pennsylvania long rifles, well known for fine craftsmanship, between 1834 and 1880 in New Carlisle, Clark Co., OH.2

SUDDEN DEATH

____________

Of Joseph A. Clippiniger at Springfield

-- Four Children in Dayton.

Joseph A. Clippinger, one of the best known citizens of Springfield was found dead in bed Wednesday morning by his wife, who went to ask him if he was feeling any better, as he had complained the previous day of being ill. Death is thought to have been due to heart trouble.

Mr. Clippinger was born in Maryland County, Virginia, July 22, 1826, and in 1869 he was married to miss Elizabeth Miller. He went to Springfield in 1877 and has resided there ever since. He was at one time prominently identified with society there and being possessed of a pleasing address and capable of making friends readily, his acquaintance is very extensive. He leaves ten children of whom Mrs. Olive Munz, Mrs. Noah Stein, Mrs. Ada Clark and Frank Clippinger reside in Dayton.

He was buried on 27 March 1902 in New Carlisle Cemetery, New Carlisle, Clark Co., OH, Findagrave #16767770.
Joseph Anthony Clippinger lived on 7 August 1850 in Donnelsville, Clark Co., OH.4 Occupation: Cobbler (1860) between 1860 and 1870 in New Carlisle, Clark Co., OH.1,2 He lived on 7 July 1860 in New Carlisle, Clark Co., OH.

Note: Joseph Anthony Clippinger was a lay minister in the Methodist Church, and preached strong sermans from the pulpit against his father's allegedly abusive use of alcohol. As a result of this public criticism, the family relationships were very poor, and the grandchildren were seldom allowed to visit the grandparents. A story told by Joseph Granville Clippinger (1873 - 1947) was that he had a single visit with his grandparents at age 6 (about 1880), and they were introduced to him as an uncle and aunt. Elizabeth, described as "brown as a berry", brought a plate of bread chunks and milk to Joseph, who then stamped his feet on the wooden floor. A pair of blacksnakes then came up through the floorboards, crawled onto his lap, and ate the bread and milk. This story was repeated to Donald L. Boyd in 2013 by a granddaughter of Joseph G. Clippinger. He lived in 1870 in New Carlisle, Clark Co., OH.2 He lived on 15 June 1900 in 11 North Shaffer Street, Springfield, Clark Co., OH.5

Biography

William Augustus Miner was born about 1862 in Clark Co., OH; living with his mother Elizabeth and step-father Joseph Clippinger as of the 1870 census of Bethel Twp. (New Carlisle), Clark County, Ohio. Listed as "Chore boy", while his two-years younger half-sister was attending school. He appears to have left the immediate vicinity by 1880, and numerous possible candidates can be found in 1880 and later censuses, depending on whether the "Miner" or "Minor" spelling is used, but none are a perfect demographic match to his parents birth locations.1
