Catherine E. Kreis

Catherine E. Kreis, 89, a native of Springfield who resided at 314 Compton Rd., Cincinnati, died in Providence Hospital, Cincinnati, at 10:10 a.m. Saturday.

Mrs. Kreis was born Dec. 15, 1891, the daughter of John and Catherine Kohler Clippenger (sic) and lived in Springfield until one year ago when she moved to Cincinnati.

She was a life member of the First Lutheran Church, Springfield.

Survivors include two son, John C. Kreis of Cincinnati and Kohler M. Kreis of Dalls, Texas; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Her husband, John L. Kreis, died in December 1961.

Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the Jackson, Lytle and Coffman Funeral Home, where services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday by the Rev. Lawrence Rugh, pastor of First Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery.

John Calvin Kreis, a retired production control manager for General Electric Aircraft Engines in Evendale, died of cancer Thursday at Hospice of Cincinnati in Blue Ash. He was 71.

Mr. Kreis was born in Springfield, Ohio. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army. He stayed in Europe to attend the Institute Auf Dem Rosenberg in St. Gallen, Switzerland.

He returned to the United States and graduated from Wittenberg University in 1954 with a bachelor’s in diplomatic service. Mr. Kreis then earned a master’s in business administration from Xavier University in the late 1960s.

Mr. Kreis moved to Cincinnati in 1968, accepting a position with General Electric. He worked at GE until retiring in 1993.

He was active with several community organizations, including Junior Achievement in Springfield. It was a group that helped young students interested in business.

Mr. Kreis was also involved with the Kiwanis of Wyoming, the national Wood Carver’s Guild, the Cincinnati Wood Carver’s Guild, the Scandinavian Society of Cincinnati and the Southern Ohio Dog and Game Protection Association. He was more active with the organizations after his retirement.

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Finneytown for 30 years.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Herta Kreis of Wyoming, a daughter, Dr. Gloria Gurdziel of Virginia Beach, Va.; a brother, Kohler Kreis of Baton Rouge, La., and two grandchildren.

Services have been held. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery in Springdale.

Memorials can be made to Faith Lutheran Church, 8265 Winton Road, Cincinnati 45231, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
