Obituary -- (Findagrave.com):
From an issue of the Van Wert Republican, date unknown: "As mentioned in our last issue, death relieved M. B. Evers, Jr., of his sufferings last Thursday morning. For several months he suffered greatly, being confined to his bed with the dread disease consumption. He was born September 24, 1862, in this town, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Evers. His father at the time of his death in 1865, being sheriff of the county. Soon after his father's death, his mother moved to Van Buren county, Michigan, taking her young son, the subject of this sketch, with her, where she died a few years later, leaving her son in destitute circumstances and among strangers. The Oddfellows, of this town, of which order M. B.'s father had been an active member, sent for him and secured a home for the lad with Capt. J. W. Hetrick, whose wife was an aunt of Evers. Faithful to their pledge, the Oddfellows provided the orphan with a good home, clothing, and had him well educated in the Van Wert Union schools. For a number of years after leaving school, Mr. Evers assisted Capt. Hetrick in his insurance office, where, by his faithfulness he soon became a practical business man.
In 1885, he was employed in the Van Wert Gas works and step by step he was promoted to the position of superintendent. Since the change in ownership of the gas works, Mr. Evers has been in the insurance business, mostly life and accident, and last December, he purchased the W. C. Lawrence & Co.'s agency, but at the time, he was failing in health and was soon compelled to go to Martinsville sanitariam, Indiana, where he remained until notified of the destruction of the Humphreys & Hughes' block in February. His office being located in the block, he lost office fixtures, papers and books excepting contents of fire proof safes. Upon being notified of the diseaster, he hastened home and for several days, endeavored to attend to business, but finally the strain was too much for him and he was confined to his home, where he rapidly grew worse until he was released by death.
February 16, 1886, he was united in married to Miss Sarah Ione Glenn, and said union has been blessed with three children, two sons and one daughter, aged twelve, seven and three. Realizing that the end was near, he called his little family to his bedside and bid them all good bye, and turning to a brother Oddfellow, he wished him to thank the Oddfellows for what they had done for him, this done he peacefully passed away.
In Mr. Evers death, Van Wert loses one of its most energetic business men, a leader in all matters that were of benefit to the community, and the Oddfellows a most energetic worker. He was a member of the four branches of the order. For the past four years, he has been representative to the Grand Encampment of the state and had been elected, but not installed, Junior Patriarch of the Grand Encampment.
Funeral services which were held from his late home on First street, Saturday morning, were conducted by Rev. A. J. Fish. The various branches of Oddfellows attended in a body, and the large number that turned out on a busy business day, demonstrated how he was beloved."
