Mrs. O. C. Phillips Goes in Death;
Rites Thursday
Mrs. Ethel S. Phillips, 59, wife of Orrin C. Phillips, died at Mt. Pleasant at 3:09 p.m. Monday after an extended illness. Her home was at 900 1/2 Sycamore street. The daughter of John W. and Hannah Forbes Rife, she was born at Lone Tree on June 4, 1887 and had been a resident of Muscatine for the past 40 years. Her marriage to Orrin C. Phillips took place on May 19, 1910 at Rock Island.
She was a member of the First Baptist church.
Surviving are her husband, two sons, Ted O. Phillips and Charles A. Phillips, both of Muscatine; five daughters, Mrs. Howard Peveler of Camanche, Ia., Mrs. E. L. Franklin of Muscatine, Mrs. R. L. Sutherland of Baldwin Park, Calif., and Viola Darlene and Vera Delores Phillips, at home.
Also surviving are four brothers, Fay Rife of Minneapolis, Minn., Earl Rife of Lone Tree, Cyril Rife of Davenport and Charles Rife of Long Beach, Calif., a sister, Mrs. Roy Williamson of Tracey, Minn., and 14 grandchildren.
Her parents and one brother preceded her in death.
The body is at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral home, and services will be held at the funeral home Thursday. Burial will be in Memorial Park.

Obituary:
PEKIN - Dolores Ellen Nieman, 89, of Saint Clair Drive passed away at 9:05 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010, at Heartland at Riverview in East Peoria.
Born Feb. 20, 1921, in Milwaukee, Wis., to Harry and Ellen (Olsen) Swensen, she married John Rudolph Nieman on July 12, 1942, in Peoria. She was preceded in death by her husband in January 1983; and two brothers, Earl and Richard.
Surviving are one son, John W. Nieman of Danville; two daughters, Cynthia (Brian) Koopmans of Sorrento, Fla., and Joellen Nieman of Pekin; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Dolores worked as a secretary for the USDA Northern Regional Research Center and for Caterpillar Inc., both in Peoria, but worked most of her life as a mother and homemaker. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Pekin, where she was a deaconess and was involved in the shut-in ministry. She also was active with the Pekin Christian Women's Club. Dolores was an avid reader and loved caring for her grandchildren.
Cremation will be accorded by Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. A memorial service will be Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011, at First United Presbyterian Church in Pekin, with the time to be arranged.
Memorial gifts may be made to Kemmerer Village, 941 N. 2500 East Road, Assumption, IL 62510. Kemmerer Village is a private, not-for-profit human service agency established in 1914 whose mission is to support families and children who face stress and turmoil in their lives.

Bert Pennington, age 83, of Route 2, Plainfield, died Monday, December 4, 1967 at his home. He was born on May 28, 1884 in Nashua, Iowa.
He was a member of the Modern Woodsmen of America.
He farmed in the Plainfield area all his life and retired 13 years ago.
Surviving are two sons, Dale and Clare of Plainfield; three grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Laura Mather of Plainfield.
Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers and three sisters.
The funeral services were held Wednesday, December 6, 1967 at Overman Chapel with the Rev. Null officiating.
Burial was in the Plainfield Cemetery.

Peter Koopmans
Peter Koopmans, 87, of Kankakee, passed away at his home Thursday (Aug. 9, 2012).
Mr. Koopmans was a foreman for Armstrong World Industries Inc. for 30 years, retiring in 1987. He was a farmer most of his life. He was born July 19, 1925, in Wichert, the son of Simon and Katie Zeldenrust Koopmans. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Koopmans was a dedicated member of Faith Reformed Church in Kankakee since 1970, where he was a former Sunday school teacher, past president of the church softball league and elder. He was a Camp Manitoqua board member, Reformed Church of America member and served on mission committees all over the world.
Surviving are his wife, the former Delores Hagen, of Kankakee, whom he married June 17, 1960, at the First Presbyterian Church in Kankakee; two sons, Brian (Cynthia) Koopmans, of Sorrento, Fla., and Bill (Sherri) Koopmans, of Union, Ky.; one daughter, Lori (Harvey) Hoekstra, of Kankakee; grandchildren, Zachary, Peter, Sam, Tyler, Travis, Allison, Kaitlyn and Kurtis; four brothers, Simon (Delores) Koopmans, of South Holland, John (Velma) Koopmans, of Belgrade, Mont., Melvin Koopmans, of Plymouth, Ind., and Tom (Eleanor) Koopmans, of LaHarpe; four sisters, Martha Boomsma, of Waupun, Wis., Katherine Runia, of Bourbonnais, Helen (Ed) DeVries, of Momence, and Janice (Richard) Alvey, of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Muriel; one brother, Clarence; and one foster son, Billy Simpson.
A gathering time for family and friends will be from 10 a.m. Saturday until the 12:30 p.m. celebration of Peter's life service, at the Faith Reformed Church in Kankakee. The Rev. Paul Akers will officiate. Burial will follow at Kankakee Memorial Gardens, Aroma Township. Memorials may be made to the Reformed Church Missions. Schreffler Life Story Funeral Homes, Kankakee Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Muriel Koopmans, 32, of St. Anne, Kankakee county, was killed Sunday when an automobile driven by her husband, Peter, 34, collided with a semi-trailer truck in Illinois route 1, three miles north of Momence.
Koopmans, his son, Brian, 2, and foster-son William Simpson, 10, were injured and admitted to hospitals. The truck driver, Olaf Grable, 39, of Manteno, was charged with making an improper left turn onto the highway. He was not injured.
