A funeral for Jonah T. “Jay” Shropshire will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Martinsville.
Burial will follow at Roselawn Burial Park in Martinsville.
Mr. Shropshire, 59, was clerk of the Virginia Senate from 1976 to 1990, then became chief of staff for Gov. L. Douglas Wilder. He died Sunday at a Leesburg hospital after suffering a stroke.
Born in Ridgeway, he was a resident of Middleburg.
Survivors include his wife, Anne Gravely Shropshire; a son, Richard T. “Rusty” Shropshire of Virginia Beach; and two sisters, Donna Shropshire of Richmond and Sherlie Doherty of Roanoke.
The family will receive friends at McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Martinsville on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

SHROPSHIRE, Richard Thomas, 50, of Richmond, Va., passed away October 2, 2015, at his home. He was the beloved son of Anne Gravely Shropshire and the late Jonah Thomas Shropshire of Richmond. He was the grandson of the late Richard P. Gravely Jr. and Bennie M. Gravely and the late Joseph E. Shropshire and Verna T. Shropshire, all of Martinsville, Va.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by aunts, Elizabeth G. Sullivan of Alexandria, Sally G. Parker of Sanford, N.C., Sherlie M. Doherty of Roanoke and Donna K. Shropshire of Richmond; and uncle, Edward M. Gravely of Martinsville, as well as many cousins.
He attended the Collegiate School, Richmond and was a graduate of the Woodberry Forest School, Woodberry Forest, Va., where he played both football and lacrosse. He received his B.A. degree in Government and Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia, where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Society and his MBA from the Darden School of Business at UVA. He had served as Chief Market Analyst for the Virginia State Corporation Commission and was later co-founder and Chief Equity Consultant of MOS Capital, Inc., in Virginia Beach. He was currently employed as Lead Health Insurance Specialist, Project Manager, and Contracting Officer’s Representative III for the Division of Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Washington, D.C. He was listed in the International Who’s Who in Business in 1994 and had served on the Board of Directors of Henry County Plywood Corp.
Affectionately known as “Rusty” to his family and friends, he had been a kayaker, trail runner, avid bicyclist and an adventurous trekker and mountaineer, having climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, as a tribute to his late father. He had most recently climbed Mera Peak in the Himalayas of Nepal, reaching the summit at 23,000 feet. Rusty had many other interests, but he also cared deeply about the environment and the problems of hunger and poverty, especially in Africa.
He was his mother’s rock and mainstay and lived his life with the highest personal integrity while living his dreams. Witty, fun-loving and kind, he will be deeply mourned and fondly remembered, not only by his family but also his many friends here and abroad.
A memorial service to honor Rusty and to celebrate his life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 24, 2015, at The Parham Chapel-Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Rd., Richmond, Va. 23229. The family requests that lieu of flowers, consider a donation in Rusty’s name to Heifer International, www.heifer.org, a foundation dedicated to the elimination of world poverty and hunger or to the Nature Conservancy, www.nature.org.

The funeral of Harrison GORDON age 76 years, who died at his home in Enon Thursday evening, of a complication of diseases will be held at the Methodist church-afternoon at 1:30. Burial will be made in the Enon cemetery. Mr. GORDON was born in Bethel township and has lived all of his life in Enon. He was a farmer and was well known in the community. He was a member of the G.A.R. and a 100 day man in the Civil war serving in Company E. For nine years, he was a tax assessor in Clark county and held that position until three years ago. Mr. GORDON was prominently identified with the Methodist church in Enon. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Martha GORDON, and last December, Mr. and Mr. Gordon, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Besides his widow, Mr. Gordon leaves eight children. Mrs. Rosie FORBECK, Williss GORDON, Mr. Katherine SHANK, Mrs. Maude HART, Ezra GORDON, Silas GORDON and Mrs. Rachel MILLER all of whom reside in Enon with the exception of Mrs. Harte and George GORDON. There are 18 grandchildren and two brothers also left, William GORDON who lives in the National pike and Scott GORDON who resides in West North Street.

Larry retired from Security National Bank following over 37 years of service. He was a member of the Springfield Kiwanis Club for over 50 years, receiving their Legion of Honor Award in 2017.

She was a member of the East Liberty Euchre Club, the Jolly Girls Club of East Liberty and enjoyed bowling with the Harding Team. She enjoyed many different crafts and cooking; but most of all, she will be remembered as a loving and caring wife, mom and grandma.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law David and (Jacquie) Wagner; daughters and sons-in-law Sandra F. and (J.D.) Smith, Janet Sue and (Frank) Bailey, Judith K. and (Butch) Lenhart, Rita J. and (Phil) Metz; sisters Virginia Stanley and June Roberts; brother Richard Morris; 11 grandchildren, numerous great and great great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Horace D. in 2006 and daughter-in-law Jeraldine A. Wagner in 1988.
Memorial services will be held 12:00 noon Tuesday June 21, at Jennings Farley Funeral Home 5591 US Rt. 68 South West Liberty. Friends may call from 10:00 am until time of service. Amaleen Boyd Wagner, 85, of Springfield, passed away Wednesday morning, March 5, 2014 at the Springfield Masonic Community Pathways Center.
She was born in Louisa, Kentucky on June 7, 1928, the daughter of the late James and Mary (Castle) Boyd.
A life-long homemaker, Amaleen loved cooking and baking, playing cards and animals. She also loved to travel, especially to Yellowstone National Park and the Rocky Mountain West.
She is survived by a daughter, Vickie Wagner Auckerman of Springfield; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Patti Wagner, also of Springfield; a sister, Carnalee Graham Ehrle of Phoenix, Arizona; and several nieces and nephews.
