; Chester and Ethel were listed in a "Marriage Licenses -- Intentions to Wed" article in the 23 DEC 1941 Anaheim Bulletin, page 7. This article names her "Jessica E. D'Arnee, 48, Gardenia." (Newspapers.com). The California marriage record named her Jessica Ethel D'Arnie, but does not list the county.
Ethel was first married to Frank Gowan, date unknown, and divorced 29 NOV 1909 at Grand Rapids, MI, per the Chautauqua County, NY, marriage license application and record No. 2019 dated 1 DEC 1909, with the groom, John George Knobloch (1887-1946). Ceremony location was Ripley, NY., and officiant was Rev. Merrill Miller. (Ancestry.com). She apparently was the mother of Charles G. Knobloch, 1912-1980, a Lt. Cdr., U.S. Navy. Neither his California Death Index record, nor his obituary provides his mother's maiden name. This marriage with John Knobloch was apparently over by 1936 when she was listed as Jessica Root in the Long Beach, California city directory, at the same address as Chester, and certainly before 8 April 1940, when Ethel was listed as Ethel Root, living with Chester Root at Los Angeles, CA, and listed her as his mother (!). Six months later, on his WW II draft registration, she was listed as Ethel Jessica Knobloch, "Friend", at the same address as his. John Knobloch also remarried in 1941, to Mabel Clare (Travis) Cummins.
Chester and Ethel were living at 850 Nancy Street, Barstow, CA in 1948, where they are listed as members of the St. Cecelia Guild of the Episcopal Church, and at the meeting described in the article, were committed to host a buffet supper at the next meeting (May 13, 1948). Desert Dispatch, Thursday, 15 APR 1948, page 13 (Newspapers.com).
On Ancestry.com, the Williams-Garcia Family Tree genealogy prepared by IsabelElena lists the mother of Charles George Knobloch as Jessica E. Blaine. This name cannot be found at Grand Rapids in the applicable time frame.
Here is a marriage of an Ethel to a Frank Gowan:
