Biography

William B. Southard was born on 10 December 1814 in North Carolina; son of Gilliam and Rebecca (Mize) Southard.1 He married Mary Davault, daughter of Jacob Davault and Mary "Polly" Hodges, before November 1864. William B. Southard died on 6 June 1881 in Johnson Twp., Maries Co., MO,

Death Notice -- The Rolla Weekly Harold, Rolla, Missouri; June 9, 1881 (Findagrave.com):

William Southard, an old Citizen of Maries County, died at his home on the south fork of the Bourbosis, on Monday.

Biographical Sketch (Internet, via Tracy DeVault):

William B. Southard holds the proud distinction of having sired more children (to be tied only by his nephew Edward Franklin) than any other member of this family tree - thirteen in all. Having had difficulties with keeping a wife (he buried three) he was finally able to sustain his fourth to finish off a long, "productive" life in 1881.

William was approximately ten years of age when his parents, Gilliam and Rebecca Southard, relocated from Orange County to McMinn County, Tennessee. It was here in McMinn County that William spent most of his youth and where he met his first wife, Elinor John. Together they had one child in 1837. Why Elinor died at such a young age is unknown; however, being that William married again that same year of 1837 leads us to believe that Elinor died during childbirth. It can only then be assumed that William married again, quickly, as he sought a mother for his newborn daughter.

William married Catherine Frost in December of 1837, only to see her pass away the following year. Apparently William had fine features as he had no difficulty in finding a new wife (or wives.) He married again the following year, this time to a woman that would be by his side for nearly thirty years. Rebecca (Detherage) John had lost her husband, William John, to an untimely death and married William Southard in October of 1839. This was four years prior to William, along with his father, brothers and sisters, having moved to present-day Maries County, Missouri.

Rebecca gave William nine children before her death in 1868, which was probably brought on by her last birth. William married again the following year to Mary (Davault) Anderson, a widow, who gave William three more offspring.

William died several years after his youngest was born, at the age of 67. William was laid to rest in Southard Cemetery in Maries County.

Note, per Tracy DeVault: Rebecca (Detherage) John-Southard died in 1863 (not 1868 as stated in the above biography). This means that Rebecca had two less children and Mary (Davault) Anderson-Southard had two more then are stated in this biography.

He was buried in June 1881 in Southard Cemetery, Maries Co., MO, Findagrave #63691807.
