Eighteen presidents. Two world wars. One depression. The invention of the microwave. Oliver Starrett has witnessed many milestones over the past century.
Oliver was born on Aug. 3, 1906, to Arkansas farmers Mose Garfield Starrett and Mary Ethel Phillips Starrett. Soon after his birth, the family moved to Texas in search of better farm land. The Starretts settled in Stroud on Nov. 16, 1907, the day of Oklahoma's statehood. In 1915, they relocated to Creek County, where Oliver plowed fields on the family's farm.
Oliver attended Lakeside School southwest of Gypsy. "Of course," he adds, "I only went when there wasn't any farming to be done."
In January 1926, Oliver temporarily relocated to Arizona in search of work. When he returned to Oklahoma later that year, he met Nellie Stiffler. They married in 1928. "It was a good, happy marriage. We had five of the best kids in the world." Nellie passed away in 1997.
In 1930, Oliver was laid off from the Skelly Oil Co. He went to work driving an ice route. "I drove around a hundred miles a day. leaving with about forty-five hundred pounds of ice in the mornings from the ice plant, which I loaded by myself." After a couple of years, Oliver went back to the oil fields. In the early 1930's, he accepted a position doing defense work, a job which took him to Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Colorado. After years of moving, Oliver finally settled his family in Bristow. Oliver began doing carpentry work. He helped build many homes in Bristow, including his daughter's. He retired in 1970.
Since his retirement, Oliver has stayed busy. He and his wife square-danced for 20 years. Oliver recalls traveling all the way to Kansas for dances: "We would drive all the way up to Chanute (Kansas), we'd dance till midnight, then drive all night just to get back home." He also enjoys an annual trip to Sacramento, California, to visit his nieces and nephews. He says his children worry about him traveling alone, but he does just fine. "Never had any trouble."
Oliver walks to Kemp's Drug Store almost every morning to drink coffee and chat with his buddies. Raymond Baker, a childhood friend and fellow coffee-drinker, says that Oliver is "a good guy. He'd speak to anyone that speaks to him, but he always speaks first."
Oliver celebrated his 99th birthday on Sunday with his children Jean, Herman, Jo, and Sue Lee. Their oldest sibling passed away in 1997.
Oliver attributes his long life to living healthy. "I walk a mile every day. I think that I'm in better shape than most people my age."
He was buried in December 2005 in Welty Cemetery, Welty, Okfuskee Co., OK, Findagrave #26721997.
