Carbon monoxide may have caused deaths
A man and a woman found dead in an East Odessa motel room shortly after 9 a.m. Friday probably died from carbon monoxide poisoning, Fire Marshall Wayne Coggins said.
Coggins said a test on a gas wall heather in the couple’s room showed that it was putting out carbon monoxide fumes. “I can’t say for sure whether it was because of the carbon monoxide or all of the oxygen burned up, but the heater was putting out monoxide,” Coggins stated.
Justice of the Peace Charles Gee Jr. pronounced the victims dead at 10 a.m. Gee ordered autopsies to determine the cause of the deaths.
Authorities identified the dead as Richard Wayne Fletcher, 23, formerly of Salt Lake City and Patti Marie Breckenridge from El Paso. Although lawmen were not sure of Breckenridge’s exact age Friday morning, they said she appeared to be in her early 20s.
The couple was discovered in room 26 of the Traveler’s Lodge, 2325 E. Eighth, by the motel manager. Police said the manager had received a call from Fletcher’s employer who became alarmed when Fletcher failed to show up for work or answer his phone.
The manager reportedly called and knocked on the door before entering the room and finding the couple dead in bed. The fire department was notified minutes after 9 a.m., and an ambulance was sent to the scene.
NOTE: The deceased woman was Patricia Maria Breckinridge, born 30 APR 1960i, daughter of James Willis and Ursula Katherina (Holk) Breckinridge, according to her Texas death certificate. (Ancestry.com) Ursula was only 18 when Patricia was born, and didn't marry James Breckinridge until 1969, so he was probably not Patricia's biological father. DLB 2025.
