Note:

From Edwin Broyles to Newland DeVault

"When I was 17 years old my father moved to Jonesboro from his home in Chucky Valley. When I was 22 years old, I came east to Theological Seminary, Auburn, N.Y. After that it was Oklahoma, Illinois, Seattle, Dallas, Texas and then 32 years ago I came to the Philadelphia area and have been here ever since. I am now director of field work for the Presbytery of Philadelphia."

Reverend Edwin Broyles was minister of the Hope Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. For the Church program, April 19, 1953, in the Minister's Minutes he wrote:

Anno Domini

The first date line read, "In the beginning," but time passed, the beginning receded, and life became more complex, and such dating was too indefinite for historical recording. Men cooperatively began to devise other ways by which passing events were localized in time. Kings and their dynasties seemed suitable for this purpose. Records began to read, "in the so-and-so of such-and-such King this-and-that came to pass.

Inevitably the King himself passed and another ruler appeared in the calendar. Such changes made records uncertain within a nation, and even more uncertain among nations.

Time increased the complications and revealed the futility of a human standard for dating covering from everlasting to everlasting. Then out of the emptiness of time came the "fullness of time," and not a dynasty but a kingdom was revealed of which there would be no end. Now it was possible to tie back to the original date line, "In the beginning - God," and connect it with King of kings, for surely now was found the Year of the Lord.

This has been so universally recognized that ever since the birth of Jesus, prior events are historically located as B. C. And not only historically but chronologically the birth of Jesus is used as the focal point of time, and "the acceptable year of the Lord" has been established as Anno Domini."

Occupation: Presbyterian Minister.

OBITUARY - Bethany Republican Clipper, Nov 1945

PEACEFUL DEATH TO MRS. F. H. BROYLES

Sudden end came Friday while enroute to visit in Nebraska

Mother of Three Doctors

Memorial Services Held Yesterday at Bethany Christian Church;

Burial Beside Husband at Auburn, Nebr.

A distinct shock to the family, relatives and friends of Mrs. F. H. Broyles was the news of her death, which occurred suddenly last Friday morning about 10:00 o'clock, while she was en route to Auburn, Nebr., to visit her sister Mrs. Charlene Ramsey. George Jennings of Bethany was driving her car, when a few miles from Stanberry, he became aware she was resting her head on the back of the seat, which he had seen her do other times when driving for her. Later, however, he noticed she was unusually pale and whe he spoke to her, she did not answer. He rushed to a nearby farm house, the home of Perry Walters in Nodaway county, and called for a doctor and ambulance to come from Stanberry. No doctor was available at that time and the ambulance did not arrive until after 11:00 o'clock. Death came very soon after Jennings noticed her condition, as he reported she never spoke and only once was there a slight movement of the head. The coroner was called from Maryville and he certified her death was from a heart attack.

Jennings called the older son Dr. Glen H. Broyles of Kansas City, who instructed him to have the body returned to Bethany to the S. M. Haas funeral home.

Another son Major Watkins A. Broyles, M. D., with Mrs. Broyles, was stranded at Flagstaff, Ariz., following serious car trouble while en route home from California, where the major was recently discharged from the Army. They were notified there of his mother's death and arrived Monday night by train in Kansas City and were brought on to Bethany.

A daughter Dr. Elizabeth Broyles, house physician at Wellesley College, Boston, Mass., was summoned and arrived Saturday, in company with her niece Mrs. James Stout (Frances Broyles) and Dr. Stout from St. Louis. Dr. and Mrs. Glen Broyles came as soon as possible after receiving the message.

Native of Nebraska

Mrs. Broyles, the former Miss Leila Watkins, was a daughter of David and Elizabeth (McGrew) Watkins. She was born Oct. 6, 1861 in Nemaha County Nebr., and was aged 85 years, one month and four days at the time of her death. She came to Bethany with her late husband, Dr. F. H. Broyles, in 1900, and had continuously made her home in this city. Dr. Broyles died eight years ago, and since then she has retained her home here, with Mrs. Lillie Jennings, who had been with the Broyles family for many years. She also enjoyed the company of her daughter Dr. Elizabeth during the summer months.

Helped Less Fortunate

Mrs. Broyles lived full and active years for her family, for her church, and for the community. Always generous to the less fortunate, she was addicted to no affectations or ostentation, and in her refined, kind way, made the path much easier for those less fortunate than herself. She was never found wavering in her convictions of right and wrong, and the benefits bestowed to her church, benefactors, and community have builded her a lasting memorial.

Funeral Services

Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 o'clock Wednesday morning at the Christian church, with Huell Warren, pastor, officiating. Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Messrs. W. H. Haas and L. E. Cassidy and Mesdames H. C. Shroyer and Raleigh Bartlett who sang "Rock of Ages" and " In the Garden." Mrs. Shroyer also sang "Goin' Home."

The funeral party left following the service for Auburn, Nebr., where interment was made yesterday afternoon beside the last resting place of her husband.

She was buried in November 1945 in Sheridan Cemetery, Auburn, Nemaha Co., NE.

Biography

Julia B. Clements was born on 15 May 1874 in Missouri. She married William Milton Broyles, son of Andrew Coffee Broyles and Louisa Ann Eliza Hunt, on 28 November 1900 in St. Louis, MO, no children. Julia B. Clements died on 14 April 1912 in Denver, Denver Co., CO.

Note:

Dr. Franklin Hunt Broyles provided the following information in a letter to Rachel Sophia (DeVault) McLean, dated February 19, 1934:

Will married Julia Clements of St. Louis, a very noted young woman, and they lived in Denver Colo, Some friends were visiting them, and she was going to take them for a drive over the city, and in some way fell on some stone steps, and was severly injures, internally, the trouble finally developing into a cancerous condition, which caused her death, in I think 1912, Her people were Catholics, and she was an only child, and Will allowed them to bury her in a Catholic cemetery in St. Louis, Will never recovered from her death, and finally give up his business and come to us, where he lingered a few yeares, and died in 1915, and I buried him in a beautiful Cemetery at Auburn Nebraska, He was a member of the Christian Church, and refused to be buried in a catholic cemetery, although he worshiped his wife. They had no children.

Note: Rhonda Johnson says that there is a common stone for Julia and William in the Sheridan Cemetery, Auburn, Nebraska. It is possible that Julia is really buried in Saint Louis and that the stone in Auburn is just for William and Julia's name on the stone is for memorial purposes.

Note: Julia (age 26) is shown in the 1900 Census living with a Kate Clements (age 47) in Saint Louis, Missouri. Kate was probably Julia's mother. Kate died 15 December 1936 in Saint Louis.

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE - Daily Gazette, Schenectady (NY), Monday, October 4, 2010 (By Bob Cudmore)

Focus on Mohawk Valley History

Amsterdam's muralist is remembered

An accomplished artist married to a local native moved to Amsterdam in 1935, and his art work is still viewed by hundreds of young people every day.

David S. DeVault painted freelance murals after coming to Amsterdam, including the map of the Mohawk Valley in the main hall of today’s Lynch middle school, more properly Wilbur H. Lynch Literacy Academy. When DeVault painted that mural, the building was the high school.

He also painted murals at Nicklaus German Restaurant at State Street and Erie Boulevard in Schenectady. Today there are paintings with a German theme signed by Jay Gogolin but no murals at that location, currently the Bangkok Thai Bistro.

Born in Bristol, Va., in 1876, DeVault was a 1907 graduate of the School of Fine and Applied Arts in New York City. After graduation, he went to Europe and studied interior decoration, painting and furniture design. Returning to New York City, he was scenic designer at the Hippodrome Theater and did decorative work at the Ritz Carlton and McAlpine hotels.

He then worked for Elgin A. Simonds, a furniture manufacturer in Syracuse. In 1915, he married Amsterdam native Esther Waldron, who went to Syracuse University. In 1923 they moved south where DeVault was the first artist on the payroll of Tennessee Furniture Co. His art work and designs appeared in magazines such as House Beautiful and Vogue.

The DeVaults moved to Amsterdam in 1935, and David DeVault continued his artistic endeavors. A son, also named David DeVault, served as a sergeant in World War II. In 1943, Esther Waldron DeVault started a nursery school at their home at 20 Northampton Road. Peter Betz, who suggested this story, attended that nursery school. The elder David DeVault retired in 1945 because of ill health.

In September 1950, another son, Lt. Milton DeVault, was killed in action in the Korean War. Lt. DeVault died only 22 days after arriving in Korea to serve as a commander with the 72nd Heavy Tank Battalion. A West Point graduate, and his wife Gayle had married in Olympia, Wash., shortly before he embarked for the war. His body was not returned to Amsterdam for funeral services until 1951.

Esther Waldron DeVault died in April 1963. She had served as a Republican election inspector at the old West Spring Street School for 25 years. The artist David DeVault died later that year. At the time of their deaths, their surviving son was living in Holly, N.Y. Their daughter Joan had married Duane Snyder and was living in Amsterdam.

He was buried in July 1963 in Green Hill Cemetery, Amsterdam, Montgomery Co., NY.
Occupation: Interior decorator for furniture company, per WWI draft registration in 1918.
