CHARLES DALLAS HURD

Charles Dallas Hurd, 87, of 2206 Cove Ave., died Sunday at the Grande Ronde Hospital. Mr. Hurd was born May 20, 1901 in Cambridge, Ohio, to Benjamin F. and Ellie Florence (Morris) Hurd. On April 21, 1924, he married Helen L. Wendell in Greensburg, Ohio. He worked for many years as a machinist for the Timkin Roller Bearing Company of Canton, Ohio. Mr. Hurd also worked in other machine shops and in restaurants until his retirement several years ago. He moved to La Grande in April of this year from Salem. He was an avid bowler and loved woodworking. Survivors include his wife Helen L. Hurd of La Grande; daughters Donna Brown and Eleanor Wilson both of La Grande, Marjorie Thompson of Bakersfield, Calif., Barbara Worth of Seattle, Wash.; a sister Blanche Mae of Akron, Ohio; 12 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; and other relatives. A grandson, John Bandamere died earlier.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Daniels Valley Funeral Chapel with Pastor Leo Cumings of the La Grande Baptist Church officiating. Concluding services will follow at the Island City Cemetery, Union County, Oregon, Island City, Union County, Oregon.

Father - Benjamin Franklin Hurd Born June 26, 1868, Died Dec 20, 1942, aged 74 yrs

Mother - Ella Morris Hurd.

"Her maiden name was Ella Florence Morris she was 97yrs and 10 months old when she died. Their children. (8) Blanche May Hurd is 86 years old and still living in Akron, Ohio. Ethel Hurd Caught her dress on fire in front of the fire place and burnt up. I never seen her. She was 3 yrs old. George Dewey Hurd died in 1964 at the age of 66 years, Charles Dallas Hurd is still going strong, no problems at 79 years, Clarence Franklin Hurd lives in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio and is 77 years old still working part time. And in good shape.

Earl Levi Hurd died in 1966 Born 1905 61yrs old.

Harvey Morris Hurd still living and is in Akron, Ohio

Waldo Benjamin Hurd is 68 yrs old and living in Florida"

The Hurd ancestors

My Grandfather Levi Hurd was an immigrant from Missouri during the Civil War but his father come to America from Ireland I don't remember his name. Levi was in favor of the north, when southerners found out they was going to kill him.

They had a small farm there in Missouri, Cows Geese and other animals, feather beds made from Goose feathers, so they hitched up the oxen to a wagon took what they could like food and other things took a Cow. Grandma Hurd carried Baby Jane in her apron, they cut the Feather beds let them go to the wind, left everything else, got out that night, Traveled at night hid in the woods in day time until they got to the Ohio line. Then our Dad was born later in Batesville, Ohio his name Benjamin Franklin Hurd. I don't know much about Grandma Hurd only that she had lived in Missouri, and she used to tell me stories about there being so many Wild Animals.

The Morris Ancestors

Seth Morris was the first to come to America from Wales then Asa Morris, I don't know if he was Seth's Brother or Son. But he was the one that had money he bought a lot of land then Solomon Morris the next generation and next Mortica Morris was our Great Grand Father, the Father of John Morris our Grand Father our Mothers Father our Mother Ella (Morris) Hurd. John got nine acres of what used to be Asa's that is where Mother & Sisters & Brothers was raised, close to Barnesville, Ohio. That makes us the sixth or seventh generation. John Morris was in the Civil War. Grandmother Morris's maiden name was Grubbs. I don't know much about her, She had two brothers, Uncle Tom Grubbs and Aunt Rosie, and George Grubbs he was a Minister.

Barbara Ann Worth, 78, of Bremerton

July 5, 1934 to May 23, 2013

Barbara Ann Worth, born in Greentown, Ohio on July 5, 1934 to Helen Wendell and Charles Hurd, passed away suddenly on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Durol Scherbinske; and her sister, Marjorie Thompson of Bakersfield, Calif. She is survived by her two sisters, Eleanor Wilson of La Grande, Ore. and Donna Brown of Pendleton, Ore.; three sons, Ron, Jack and Arnie Scherbinske (name changed to Mike Lost); and one daughter, Pamela Hartz, all of Washington state. She has seven granddaughters: Julie, Natasha, Shayna, Samantha, Amanda, Sarah, Selina and Kristina; and two grandsons, Brian and Isaac. She has ten great-grandchildren. Barbara was married in Seattle on Feb. 27, 1952 and made her home in the SeaTac area. She moved to Bremerton in 1993 to be closer to her daughter. She loved her family very much and gave sacrificially. She will be deeply missed. Her internment will be at Ivy Green Cemetery, 1401 Naval Avenue, Bremerton. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 2, 2013 at 3 p.m. at Crossover Ministries; 3105 Judson St., Gig Harbor, WA 98335, located below Timberland Bank.
