Obituary -- Obituary -- The Tennessean, Nashville, Tennessee, Sunday, 23 JAN 2020:
Janice Walker Wendell was born July 11, 1942 in East Tennessee and passed peacefully on January 13, 2022 surrounded by her beloved family in Nashville. Known by many for her courageous spirit and business acumen, she always put the needs of a friend, family and community before her own. She achieved equal success in business, charitable and philanthropic endeavors and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
Janice moved with her family from Bowling Green, Kentucky to Nashville in 1957 - attending Donelson High School where she was actively involved in various clubs, taught sewing classes after school, was voted class president and “Most Likely to Succeed.” She attended Nashville Business College after graduating high school.
Janice Wendell began her professional career in 1964 with Showbiz, a division of Noble Dury Advertising where she produced and sold such seminal nationally syndicated country, R&B and gospel television programs as The Porter Wagoner Show, The Beat!!!, and Gospel Jubilee with Les Beasley and the Florida Boys. In 1969, she co-founded Creative House, Inc. which soon thereafter became Eric Ericson & Associates advertising agency. Representing clients such as National Life & Accident Insurance Co., Third National Bank (later SunTrust), Opryland USA, Martha White Foods, Kentucky Fried Chicken, the State of Tennessee and Murray Ohio Manufacturing Co. the agency grew to be the largest privately held marketing and advertising agency in the southeast. In 1987, Janice became the primary owner of the firm which was renamed Ericson Marketing Communications. She sold the agency and retired from her advertising career in 1992. It was through business that Janice met the love of her life, E.W. “Bud” Wendell, whom she married in December, 1984. In nearly 40 years of marriage, they traveled the world together – spreading their infectious kindness, humility and a sincere love for family and friends old and new. She and Bud cherished the adventure of seeing and learning from countries and people all over the world - always returning with great affection to their beloved home base of Nashville.
Throughout their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Wendell’s partnership included many charitable, civic and philanthropic interests. Janice joined the Country Music Association board of directors in 1982 where she served until 1996. Additionally, she served on the boards of The Arthritis Foundation, The Nashville Symphony, American Cancer Society, The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation, The Sarah Cannon Cancer Center, The Country Music Foundation, The Country Music Association, Tennessee Performing Arts Center, The Nashville Tourism Commission, Third National Bank, The Junior League of Nashville, and Cheekwood Estate & Gardens. In the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s, Janice served on the board, including a term as Chairman, of Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. She also served as Chairman of the Symphony Ball and on the Symphony’s Executive Committee.
She received numerous awards including the United Way’s Women’s Initiative Spirit of Giving Award. In 1989, Nashville business magazine Advantage named Janice “Woman of the Year.” Savvy magazine named her one of “America’s 60 Leading Businesswomen” in 1990. That same year, the Nashville Advertising Federation honored Janice with the Silver Medal, the group’s highest accolade. In 2011, Source Nashville named her to their Hall of Fame recognizing exceptional women leaders in the music and entertainment industries.
Alongside her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Wendell were contributors to the Monroe Carrell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, The Country Music Hall of Fame, The Country Music Foundation, The United Way of Middle Tennessee, The Nashville Symphony, The Schermerhorn Symphony Center, Cheekwood Estate & Gardens, The Boy Scouts of America, First Presbyterian Church, the Jack C. Massey Graduate School of Business, Montgomery Bell Academy, The Oak Hill School and Alive Hospice. Through their efforts, funds were raised to significantly advance the Angel Transport and Life Flight programs at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital as well as relocate the Country Music Hall of Fame to downtown Nashville.
She loved deeply, led courageously and held herself and everyone around her to the highest standards of integrity, generosity and authenticity. She was a compassionate listener and would take up the fight for a person in need. She would lend her strong voice to a worthy cause. Most of all, when she hugged you, you felt as though you were the most loved person in the world. She held a special place in her heart for, and collected figurines of angels and now, she is one herself.
Mrs. Wendell was preceded in death by her parents, William Parkey Walker and Beulah June Cheatham and daughter, Lisa Gail Pugh. She is survived by her husband, E.W. “Bud” Wendell; children: Eric N. Ericson Jr. (Tricia), Lindy Reece (Bo), Beth Cosgrove (Dave), Danny Wendell (Patricia), Andrew Wendell and 11 grandchildren. Also she is survived by her sisters Mary Lynn Griswold and Karen Seale (Tom) of Fairhope, AL, and Pam Crockett of Lilburn, GA and her brother
