Obituary:

Funeral services for Mrs. Susan Yandell Wendel Barry, New Orleans socialite and artist who died Sunday, will be conducted at 4 p.m. Wednesday, from the Tharp-Sonheimer-Tharp funeral home, followed by internment in Metairie Cemetery. She died at her residence, 423 Walnut St., following a heart attack. She was born in one of Tennessee's oldest families in Murfreesboro. Their home was used by Gen. Garfield as his headquarters during the Civil War, after the inmates had been evicted. She attended school in New York City, later going to Yale Univeristy, where she graduated from the art school. Returning to New York she painted and did illustrations for several well known magazines. In 1898, she married Eugene T. Barry, of Atlanta, himself a member of an old Southern family. In 1916, they came to New Orleans, and except for a brief return to New York, have lived in New Orleans since. Mr. Barry has a marine insurance agency, is a member of the Boston Club, and other social organizations. Mrs. Barry was a member of the New Orleans Garden Society. Survivors are three daughters; Mrs. Elizabeth W. Barry, Mrs. Charles Lorenzen, and Mrs. Donald R. Brian.

GULFPORT - Mrs. Elizabeth Wendel Barry Johnson, age 100, and a resident of Gulfport, MS, died Monday, December 4, 2000, in Gulfport.

Mrs. Johnson was a native of New Orleans, LA, and a resident of Gulfport for the past 38 years. She received degrees from Smith College in New York, Loyola in New Orleans, and the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. Mrs. Johnson was a teacher and an accomplished pianist, and was a member of United Daughters of the Confederacy at Beauvoir in Biloxi, MS, and was a member of Handsboro Presbyterian Church in Gulfport.

Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by a daughter, Kate J. Ellison; and a son, E. Barry Johnson.

Survivors include a granddaughter, Eleanor Gourley of Birmingham, AL; and two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Gourley of Beaufort, SC, and Paul Gourley III of Birmingham.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, at Handsboro Presbyterian Church, where friends may call after 1 p.m.

A native Texan, Mr. Spence was born in Austin April 29, 1860, a son of Joseph and Margaretta Spence. His father at one time was State Land Commissioner of Texas. He was educated at home and in the private schools of Austin, later attending the high school in Ann Arbor, Mich., from which he was graduated. Later he took his law degree in 1883, from the Cumberland University at Lebanon, Tenn. In the same year he moved to Dallas and in 1886, formed a partnership with Judge J. M. McCormick, which rapidly became one of the leading law firms in North Texas....Mr. Spence and Miss Stella White, a daughter of the late Judge Alexander White of Dallas county were married in 1886. Of seven children born, one died in infancy, while two sons, Joseph Gilbert Spence and Wendel Hunter Spence died within recent years. Surviving are his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Margaretta Haven and Mrs. Linda Brown of Ames, Iowa; two sons Alex W. and Charles Metcalf Spence of Dallas; two grandchildren and a brother, Dr. Harry Spence of Eugene, Ore.

Son, Alex White Spence, was an attorney who was president of the Board of Education 1932-34 and for whom a Dallas school is named.

Biography:

David Wendel Spence, B.Sc., C.E., a native of Austin, Texas, was born on the 22d day of September 1868. He first attended private schools in Austin and was four years at Prof. Bickler's Texas German and English Academy at that place. In 1889 he graduated from the University of Texas with the degree of B.Sc. In September of 1889, he entered Ann Arbor, where he remained one year at post-graduate work. After a year's practical work at Denver, he obtained the degree of C.E. at Ann Arbor. He was then draughtsman a while at Denver, and in November of 1891 was chief engineer with the South Halsted Street Iron Works. He here designed the girders for the Congress Street Hotel, an addition to the Auditorium Hotel. In August of '02, he accepted the position of Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering and Drawing at the A. and M. College of Texas.

He was buried in 1917 in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin, Travis Co., TX, Findagrave #47717479.
