Robert Franklin Wendel was born in May 1872 in Rutherford Co., TN.1,2 He died on 1 March 1935 Obituary -- Robert Franklin Wendel, who for some years has made his home with his sister, Mrs. R. L. Hay, departed this live on Friday, March 1, about 5:00 p.m. the cumulation of a long illness. He was born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, the son of Dr. Robert S. and Mrs. Emma James Wendel. His early education was received in the schools of Murfreesboro, and in the preparatory school at Georgetown, Kentucky. His collegiate and professional training at Washington and Lee University at Lexington, Virginia. For many years he was connected with the legal department of the American Waterworks Company in Pittsburgh, Pa., and New York City. Some years ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis which unfitted him for the practice of his profession and since then he has made his home with his sister. He was a man of bright intellect, engaging manners, quick wit, abounding good humor, and a high standard of integrity. He loved life, and was patient and brave in his long illness. There was a brief service at the home in Walkerton on Sunday, March 3, at 9:30 a.m., conducted by Rev. Mr. Wilson of the M.E. church and the Rev. Mr. Armstrong of the Presbyterian church, both of Walkerton. Mr. Wendel Nichol, of Nashville, Tennessee, a nephew of the deceased accompanied the body to Murfreesboro for burial.

He was buried in March 1935 in Evergreen Cemetery, Murfreesboro, Rutherford Co., TN.


Note: Robert Franklin Wendel received his early education at a preparatory school in Georgetown, Kentucky and his undergraduate and professional education at Washington and Lee University. He was an attorney for the American Water Works Company in Pittsburg and New York City for many years. He spent the last few years of his life in Murfreesoro and is buried there in the family lot in Evergreen Cemetery. Robert Franklin Wendel lived on 4 June 1900 in 203 Dithridge Street, Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., PA.2

Graveside services for J. Searcy Nichol, 83, of 1615 Woodmont Blvd., a retired civil engineer, will be at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

The Rev. William Dixon Gray will officiate. The body is at Finley-Dorris and Charlton Funeral Home.

Nichol died yesterday at Baptist Hospital.

He was a native of Nashville and attended Wallace University Preparatory School here. He was graduated in 1902 from the Vanderbilt University School of Engineering.

He retired about 25 years ago.

Survivors include five sisters, Mrs. G. N. Keeling, San Antonio, Mars. Edwin T. Noel, Nashville, Mrs. Elizabeth N. Spicer, Nashville, Mrs. Sam Sweeney, Columbia, and Miss Roberta Nichol, Wiersddale, Fla.; and a brother, Wendell Nichol, Donelson.



He was buried on 16 September 1963 in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Nashville, Davidson Co., TN.


Note:

Searcy Nichol married Sibyl Gordon Thompson, a native of Australia, about 1920, according to the 1930 census. Probably he met her in conjunction with a building project in Australia which was the basis for his 1916 passport application, at which time he was living in the Hotel Somerton in San Francisco. Sibyl's given age varies in census and passenger list documents, such that her birth year was apparently between 1893 and 1900. The Nashville Tennesseean newspaper had numerous articles during the 1940s and early 1950s describing her grand trips to Europe, the Middle East, and Mexico as well as back to Australia. She is not mentioned after the early 1950s, and she is not mentioned in his 1963 obituary. There were no children and I suspect the marriage broke up in the 1950s. DLB 2018.
