DECATUR, Ind., Nov. 4.---Dan Champer, of east of Geneva, who has been nineteen months in naval service, returned to New York after spending a fifteen days’ furlough here. He visited here a short time, also, with the J. F. Arnold family.
Mr. Champer had a very narrow escape from drowning on the sinking ship America, October 15, in the harbor of Hoboken, N.J. He was on the lower deck, “F,” when he was awakened in the morning at five o’clock, finding the water nearly over his head. He escaped by diving out the little door of his room into the wash room and going up the narrow space of the air vent.
He has made the trip across nine times. There are 6,000 soldiers conveyed at one time and 6,000 tons of coal required for one trip. On the ship which sank was lost $1,000,000 worth of sugar.
He is a brother of Joe Champer of Pleasant Mills.
Occupation: Superintendant at aluminum smelting plant.
