Kern Valley Sun (Lake Isabella, CA) - Wednesday, March 5, 2014
Roy was born in a farm house in Walton, Neb. on Feb. 1, 1922. He was the second of five children born to Fred and Sadie Faulhaber. He attended District 24, a one-room schoolhouse through eighth grade, then went to Walton High School, where he ran track, played basketball, and played third base on the baseball team.
After graduation, he married Irene Denman. They had one son, Roy, before moving to Buffalo, NY, where they had two more sons, Gerald and Richard. He worked for Curtis-Wright Corp. from March 1941 to March 1944.
In 1944, he went into the Army Air Corp where he served as a tail gunner on a bomber, and did Air Sea Rescue on the East Coast and in Central and South America. After his discharge, he moved his family to Southern California.
He lived in Hawthorne for many years, where he worked for Air-Flo Aluminum Awning Co. In 1960 he moved to Orange, Calif., and he became part owner of Hasting Awning. Notice from newspaper:
"Proves a girl can take over farming work
So you don't think a girl can do farm labor work? Well, Virginia Faulhaber, 17, is a girl who does the work of a hired man.
Now a high school graduate, Virginia was born and raised onher father's 180 acre farm near Bennet. She milks cows, grinds chicken feed, runs a tractor, drives a team of horses, raises chickens, shucks corn and does all the other farm jobs of a hired hand.
Virginia thinks anyone who wants to work on a farm can do the work. However, a city girl shouldn't try to do it unless she has some farm experience. It is important, Virginia feels, that the farmer take time to tell his new helper how to do things.
Virginia, who has always liked the farm, took over the job as top helper when her two older brothers went to work in war factories. She says farming is a lot of fun and she would not live in the city for anything. When something happens to the tractor Virginia drives the team of horses.
A member of the 4-H club for two years, she took sewing, but she didn't find out about the livestock group until later. Out of the farm's 1000 chickens, Virginia has about 37 of her own."
