From the compiled series of "The Gospel Herald", FHL #007951336, images 1553-4, information provided by Bertha Phelps Windle for the book Ozark Heritage - Dent County, Missouri, 1851-1980, Volume 2, by Ken Fiebelman (familysearch.org):
We sure had a hard time clearing the land. We had to carry water from a spring near the Meramec River. It was a pretty place to fish, trees hanging over the river, and the water so clear and blue. We walked miles to school (New Home), and the woods were full of snakes. I had to carry milk from the Maledy farm one and a half miles away. We went to New Home Church, and each week we had a different preacher. We cut logs for the house, and my brother Ervin and the neighbors came and put up the house. My dad made oak shingles and went twenty-five miles in a wagon to get lumber for the extra rooms. Dad dug a nice well and made a cement top. My dad raised tobacco, and we got a molasses mill and made molasses for the farmers all around. Once a year, we went in a wagon twelve miles to Sligo for the 4th of July Celebration. My dad played the "Fiddle" for square dances, and I would "beat" the strings. People would fill my arms with goodies. Dad was the best around. Well, we got barns, chicken houses, fences, and a pretty house.
Dad bought two horses and a cow. Our neighbors were U S. Clark, Bill Murrays, Maledy’s, Huitts, Johnnie Brockes (cousin), and the McCall’s. My half cousins Lewis and Horace Ogles and their sister Minnie stayed with us many times. Maud Brockes, another cousin. was a very good friend.
John C. and Theodosia Godbey Phelps had eleven children. Ervin (b. Oct. 5, 1888 - d. St. Louis, Missouri in the fifties); James (b. Jul. 11, 1890 - d. Aug. 11. 1891 Sligo, Missouri); Bertha Irene (b. Oct. 25. 1892 lives in Sioux City, Iowa); Cleo (b. in Missouri - d. South Bend. Indiana); Nellie (b. Jan. 21. 1894 - d. Jun. 25. 1895 on the farm); Leonia (b. Nov. 30, 1899 - d. 1978 in California); William Henry (b. Jul. 26, 1901 - lives in VA hospital Arizona); Pearl (b. Oct. 11, 1903 - d. Jul. 24, 1936 in Council Bluffs, Iowa); Lillie (b. Sept. 1, 1905 lives in South Sioux City, Nebraska); Paul (b. Sept. 1, 1906 - d. Dec. 9, 1965, in Minnesota); Mary (b. Oct. 1, 1908 - lives in California).
When my grandpa died Jul. 31, 1906, and my step-grandmother nine months later, my father sold his forty acres and moved into my grandpa's house. He also became the legal guardian of William Phelps, grandpa's foster son.
I married William Aug. 22, 1908. William took his mother's name (Windle) at this time. We were married in the Court House in Salem by Judge Rice. We lived in Sligo until 1911, then we took a train to South Dakota. My dad sold his farm in Dent County around 1912 or 1913, and he and his family moved to South Dakota also. John C. Phelps died in a nursing home in Mission Hill, South Dakota, Dec. 21, 1944. Theodosia died in California April. 1944. William and I have lived in Sioux City, Iowa, for sixty-seven years and we celebrated 71 years of marriage on Aug. 22, 1979. I am now 87 years old and will have my 88th birthday Oct. 25, 1980. William had his 91st birthday Mar. 10, 1980.
We had thirteen children, eleven still living in Sioux City, Iowa, ninety-four grandchildren and eleven great-great-grandchildren, and two great-great-great-grandchildren.
One summer, William and I went back to Salem and visited the town and the old farm. We did see a few people we knew, but everything has changed. But we still remember.
Bertha Phelps Windle.
