Employees at A. B. White Store Battled Steam Tuesday Morning
Lots of steam issuing from the basement department of the A. B. White store Tuesday morning was the cause for considerable worry for two employees, Henry Westerbeck and Roy Lowder.
Shortly after the fire was built a heavy blanket of steam filled the upper half of the lower room and they found it necessary to crawl on hands and knees to reach the light switch in order that they might see just what was the trouble.
They found that the large radiator made of long three to four inch pipes constructed in an L-shape and which was suspended from the ceiling had fallen during the night. Steam was escaping at the points where the radiator had been connected. All the radiators were turned off and the places closed where the steam was escaping.
Since the radiator was hung above an aisle not much damage resulted from the fall although the steam dampened a few articles.

WASTE FATS --- NEEDED TO MAKE EXPLOSIVES
The need is urgent. War in the Pacific has greatly reduced our supply of vegetable fats from the Far East.? ? It is necessary to find substitutes for them.? Fats make glycerine. And Glycerine makes explosives for us and our allies --- explosives to down Axis planes, stop their tanks, sink their ships.?We need millions of pounds of glycerine and housewives of America can help supply them.
Henry Westerbeck,
County Chairman.
FOUR THINGS TO DO
1. Save all your waste cooking fats after you've got all the cooking good out of them. Save pan drippings from roast ham, beef, lamb and poultry. Save broiler drippings from steaks, chops, veal and bacon. Save deep fats, whether lard or vegetable shortening from fried potatoes, fish, donuts, etc.
2.? ? Pour into clean, wide-mouth can. It is best to pour into a wide-mouthed can, as a coffee or vegetable shortening can. Be sure the can is spotlessly clean.? ? And strain your fats as you pour them in, so that meat particles and other foreign matter are removed.
3. Keep in refrigerator, or a cool, dark place until you have collected at least 1 pound.
4.?Take to your meat dealer listed below who is cooperating patriotically in this drive. He will weigh your can of fat, pay you the established price of 4¢ per pound for it, and start it on its way to the war industries.
FOUR THINGS NOT TO DO
1.? ? Don't take less than 1 pound to your meat dealer.
2.? ? Don't take your fats to the meat dealer in glass containers, paper bags or cartons, if you have anything else that will serve.
3. Don't let fats stand so long that they become rancid. If they do, the glycerine content is reduced.
4.? ? Don't take your fats to the meat dealer on week ends if you can avoid it. help him by returning them early in the week.

Mrs. Paul Nabholz, the mother of Mrs. Price Smouse of this city, died at her home north of Shellsburg Tuesday night at the age of 69 years. Her illness was a short duration and her death comes as a distinct shock to her family and friends.
The funeral was held this morning at the Oak Grove church, of which deceased had been a member many years. The services were at 11:00 o'clock Burial was in the Shellsburg cemetery.
Mr. and Mrs. Nabholz celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last July when all their family was at home for a number of days.
Mrs. Nabholz was the mother of ten children, all of whom with the husband survive her. During her last illness all the sons and daughters with the exception of two, reside in Canada, were with the mother and at her bedside when the end came.
The Nabholz family has a remarkable record as there has never been a death among the children and only one grandchild has been taken. Mrs. Nabholz was a good woman. Her interest were centered in her home and children but she was always ready and willing to do for others in need of her ministering hand.

"Pig Hatching" Is an Old Story To Fish Family
SHELLSBURG -- This business of "pig Hatcheries" isn't new to Rollie Lee Fish and his sons, Myron and Orville. They've been doing it for years.
It's pretty widely accepted that some people can raise pigs and some can't.
Mr. Fish and his sons have little trouble saving pigs, but if they tried to fatten them for market they’d run into another problem -- no feed. So they sell their pigs as feeders -- between 600 and 700 of them a year. -- and have no trouble finding a market.
Most is Untillable
More than half of the hilly land on the farm operated by Mr. Fish and Myron north of Shellsburg has to be left in timber or permanent pasture. If cropped it would become barren waste-land in a few years. "And I like to see a little grass growing out there, Mr. Fish said.
Orville has the same problem on his farm a half mile north of his father's. Only 45 of the 140 acres on his farm are tillable.
"This year," Orville said, "I have only 15 acres of corn, which won't even be enough to feed my sows. I have raised hundred-bushel-to-the -acre corn, but I can't grow corn every year. We usually figure on corn about one year out of four. That's the only way to keep all the topsoil from washing off.
But while the fish hills aren't too well suited for row crops, they seem to be a good place for raising pigs. Orville, who has saved 115 pigs from 14 sows so far this fall, gives the topography part of the credit for his success at pig raising. As he put it: "Every time it rains it washes the disease germs off -- and some of the soil along with it, I guess."
Farrow In Barns
Neither Mr. Fish nor Orville have any special equipment for farrowing their sows. Two horse barns on the farms serve the purpose.
"I keep about 40 portable gates handy," Orville said, "and when a sow gets ready to farrow, I just pen her up.
He has plans, however, for building a new farrowing house -- perhaps next summer.
"Then I'll probably keep the hog house and barn both full of sows and pigs," he said.
Orville thinks a good disposition is the best quality a brood sow can have, and he chooses his breeding stock with that in mind.
"An old sow that's cranky isn't worth a dime to you whether she has one teat or a dozen," he explained. "I like to keep sows that won't jump up and trample pigs every time I climb into a pen."
Pick Brood Sows
Soon after they've farrowed, Orville ear-notches healthy gilts from big litters providing their mother's have quiet dispositions. Then, before they would be sold as feeders, he saves back about half those with ear marks -- the ones that are the best doers. He also watches for even markings -- they''re Spotted Poland Chinas -- to keep his herd looking uniform. Sows are grade, but he keeps a purebred boar.
Orville likes to castrate his pigs when they're about two weeks old.
"At that age," he said, "they never miss a meal. And then there's nothing to stop me from vaccinating when the pigs are six to eight weeks old."
