Enlisted at Cincinnati, Ohio, in Captain John T. Herberts 2nd Regiment of Heavy Artillery, U.S. Army. He wrote a letter to his brother, Hiram Kitzmiller on December 21, 1863, a month before he died:

"Munfordsville, Ky.

Dear Brother:

I take this present opportunity to inform you that I am well at this time, hoping that these few lines find you the same -- I suppose you think hard of me for not writing sooner -- you must excuse me for this time -- I will try and do better hereafter I suppose you herd that I was down in old Kentuck, after the rebs -- I volunteered four months ago -- I like solgering first rate, better than cabinetmaking, it is played out, I am going to solger now for a living unless the bloddy rebels scalp me, but I am not much scard yet, I do not scare wort a D. I belong to the second heavy artillery, I am going to fight for that good old flag that she may still wave ore the land of the home of the brave of the free. I would like to here from Franklinville and no how you are doing. I cant here from any of you - I suppose you have awl forgotten me but, Ab, is awl right doeing well -- I get plenty to eat and good clothes to keep me warm and get my green backs every two months -- the hardest times I have is standing picket that is very unpleasant when the weather is cold, but I can stand it very well I am hartier than ever I was since I volenteered. I am harty as a buck -- but I think I can stand the storm it is not long when this cruel war is over, then we will awl meet at home again and kind friends we left behind. I left one or two little black eyd ducks up in Ohio I would like to see very well I think I will get a furlow in about five weeks then I am going up to see Jesse Hartsock and others. I would like to here from little Rodrick Dorsey, and others, tell them to write to me I would be glad to here from them. I can's tell when I will get home but I think I will see you awl again I am now at campt at Munfordsville 73 miles south of Lewisville on the Lewisville and Nashville railroad we have a pretty camp right on the bank of green river no more at this time answer soon give my love to awl direct your letters to Munsfordsville, Ky second O H A Co H in care of Capt J F Herbert."

He died of fever in the hospital at Munfordville, Kentucky a month after writing the letter.

Henry Lafayette Kitzmiller was born on 20 December 1841 in Frederick Co. (probably), MD, 1900 census shows 1839, but 1850 census shows him age 10 as of December 26, so it could well have been 1840. His parents took him to Littlestown, Adams County, Pennsylvania to be christened, but that is not a long journey from Frederick County, Maryland, even by horse and buggy.1,2 He died after June 1900.

Biography

Paul Weldon Keefauver was born on 13 December 1892 in Jonesborough, Washington Co., TN; In 1910, Paul Weldon Keefauver moved from Jonesborough, Washington Co., Tennessee to Colorado with his parents and siblings. There he met and married Elizabeth J. "Lizzie (Weese) Ackerman-Collar. Lizzie was 24 years older than Paul and had been married twice before. Her first marriage was to Frank Ackerman. Lizzie and Frank had eight children including a daughter Goldie Viola Ackerman. This marriage ended in divorce in 1905. Lizzie was second married to Frank A. Collar. This marriage also ended in divorce in 1913, just a week before Lizzie married Paul Weldon Keefauver. All these marriages took place in Colorado. Shortly after their marriage, Paul, Lizzie and Lizzie's youngest daughter from her first marriage moved back to Jonesborough, Tennessee where Paul and brother Elbert Keefauver operated Keefauver's Garage. The 1920 Census for Jonesborough, Washington Co., Tennessee shows the family of Paul Keefauver, wife, Lizzie, Paul's step-daughter, Goldie Viola Ackerman and Paul's and Lizzie's daughter, Virginia Pauline Keefauver. Goldie Viola Ackerman died in Jonesborough, Washington Co., Tennessee in 1921. Shortly after her death, Paul, Lizzie and daughter Virginia Pauline moved back to Colorado. In 1922, Paul and Lizzie separated. Lizzie and Virginia moved to California to be with Lizzie's widowed mother, Rozilla E. (Smith) Weese. Rozilla died in 1925.1 He married Elizabeth J. "Lizzie" Weese on 13 September 1913; Elizabeth was first married to Frank Ackerman on 2 APR 1888 in Boulder Co., CO, with whom she had eight children, and second to Frank A. Collar after 1905. He and Elizabeth J. "Lizzie" Weese were divorced in 1926 in Weld Co., CO. He married Cora Josephine Caine on 28 November 1926 in Brighton, CO. He died on 15 December 1957 in Loveland, Larimer Co., CO,

Paul Keefauver Dies

Paul W. Keefauver, 65, a retired timber worker and mechanic, died suddenly Saturday at his home at 1203 East Second Street in Loveland. Death was ascribed to a heart attack.

Mr. Keefauver came to Loveland two years ago from Newcastle, Colo. Most of his life was spent in the area of Longmont and Hygiene. He was born at Jonesboro, Tenn., Dec. 13, 1892.

Nine children survive – Paul, Elbert, and John of Loveland, Charlie of Montrose, Colo., and Franklin Keefauver, a Marine Corpsman stationed on Okinawa; Mrs. Mildred Pfalzgraff and Miss Lucille Keefauver of Loveland, Mrs. June Cross of Newcastle and Mrs. Virginia Silgren of Los Angeles.

There also are five brothers, a sister and 10 grandchildren.

The funeral has been set for next Friday at the Hammond Funeral Home in Loveland, with burial to take place at Hygiene.
