Biography

Mary E. Windell was born about January 1860 in Huntington Twp., Ross Co., OH.2,1 She married Lewis Toops, son of Henry Toops and Mary Ann Darby, on 10 September 1882 in Ross Co., OH. Mary E. Windell married J. M. Gentry on 11 April 1911 in Ross Co., OH, According to the Ross County marriage record, this J. M. Gentry was the son of W. M. and Elizabeth (Potts) Gentry. No person with this name is found in Ross County public records of that time. There was an Elizabeth Potts (1827 - 1912) who married William Marion Gentry on 15 NOV 1855 at Chattooga County, Georgia. They had a son, John Gentry, born about 1859, as listed in the 1860 census, Broom Tow Valley, Chatooga County. This appears to be the same family listed at Mulberry, Franklin County, Arkansas as of the 1870 census, with sons John, age 12, and James, age 10. One of these sons could have been the J. M. Gentry who married Mary E. Windell in 1911, although how either of them ended up marrying in Ross County, Ohio is very difficult to imagine, given that they appear to have lived most of their adult lives in Texas. Whoever the J. M. Gentry was, this marriage appears not to have lasted long, as a June 1913 newspaper article about Mary's daughter Bessie Toops' marriage, names Bessie's mother as "Mrs. Mary Toops of Vine street". Mary (Windell) Toops is found living in the Athens Ohio state hospital for the insane as of the 1920 census, where she died in 1921. She died on 27 February 1921 in Athens Co., OH,

Ohio Department of Health; Columbus, Ohio; Ohio Deaths, 1908-1932, 1938-1944, and 1958-2007 (Ancestry.com).

Note: After her first husband's death, Mary E. Toops, 38, appeared at a lunacy hearing on 5 April 1898 and was declared incompetent. The 1900 census information for her mother, Sarah J. Windell, indicates six children born, five living as of that date. Since Sarah's son William died young in 1875, Mary must have still been living, although she is not found in the 1900 census. Her youngest daughter Elizabeth "Bessie" Toops was living with the Windells in 1900 and 1910. Mary E. Windell lived on 2 May 1910 in Pleasant Twp., Madison Co., OH.3 She lived on 12 January 1920 in Athens State Hospital for the Insane, Athens, Athens Co., OH.4
