Vernon, Linn Co., IA,

Obituary -- The Lisbon Herald, Lisbon, Iowa, Thursday, 11 JAN 1912 (via Findagrave.com):

John Stouffer Smith was the son of George C. Smith and Hannah Stouffer Smith and was born in Chambersburg, Franklin county, Pa., November 22, 1846. He died at Mt. Vernon, Iowa, at ten o'clock in the evening of January 1, 1912, at the age of 65 years, 1 month and 10 days. He had three brothers and three sisters, two of whom died, Lydia Ann in early childhood and one in infancy. Two brothers, Dr. William C., of Harrisburg, Pa.; George H., of Newark, N.J., and two sisters, Mrs. S. E. Shetter, of DeKalb, Ill., and Mrs. Kate M. Shaffer, of Philadelphia, Pa., remain to mourn the loss of a brother. Mrs. Shetter, the eldest, was the only one who could be present at his death.

Mr. Smith was married to Miss Josie Wagner in Toledo, Iowa, November 24, 1874. There were born to them Howard Alfred, December 27, 1876, who gladdened the home for one brief month, and Dr. Homer C. Smith, of Correctionville, Iowa, who was present to strengthen him and to cheer the heart of his mother.

The deceased grew to manhood on a farm. Beyond the common school he was educated in Cottage Hill college, York, Pa. At about the age of 21 he moved west to Mount Carroll and Sterling, Illinois, where he clerked in dry goods stores for a time and then entered the Christian ministry. He became a member of the United Brethren conference in Iowa in 1873 and filled the following appointments: Red Oak near Mechanicsville, Centennial church, near Lisbon, and Waltham and County Line in Tama county, Iowa.

Severe nervous headaches drove him from this field of labor to which it seemed God had called him. He then became a jeweler and learned the trade in Toledo, Iowa. For several years he continued in the business in Lisbon, Mechanicsville and Tipton, but failing health forced him to an outdoor life and he took up the Sunday School Missionary work in Cedar county and did most effective service for the cause of his Master, the interest of which lay very near his heart.

In 1891 he again entered the jewelry business in Mount Vernon, and continued therein until five years ago. Soon after moving to Mount Vernon he completed the optical course in the McCormick Optical school in Chicago and becaem a successful optician.

Mr. Smith was mayor of Lisbon or a number of years and a member of the school board of Mount Vernon for several terms. Better than all these he was converted when a boy and enjoyed a rich religious experience until his Heavenly Father took him home. He served as Sabbath school superintendent in the Mthodist church in Mechanicsville and in the United Brethren church in Lisbon, and for many years has been a member of the board of stewarts in the Methodist church in Mount Vernon. There are many who will thank God for his help and the entire community will feel a great loss in his death.

Brother Smith was dearly beloved .......

He was buried in January 1912 in Woodlawn Cemetery, Toledo, Tama Co., IA, Findagrave #78854666.
John Stouffer Smith lived in June 1880 in Lisbon, Linn Co., IA.2

Note:

The 1907 History of the Greencastle Church lists him as a United Brethren minister, but there are no other known records to support that assertion. He may have been a local lay pastor.
