Born in the Netherlands to English parents, he became a professional soldier and was brought to Massachusetts in 1630 to train the colony’s militia. He resided Boston, MA; Dover, NH; Stamford, CT; New Amsterdam; and Flushing, Southold, Setauket and Oyster Bay, all on Long Island, NY.
Cadet in the Guard of the Prince of Orange 1628, Captain Pequot War 1637, Indian War 1643-4, Anglo-Dutch War 1653. Member General Courts (Legislatures) of Massachusetts Bay and New Haven, Council of New Netherland, and Hempstead Convention of 1665; Selectman of Boston, Governor of Dover, Sheriff of Flushing, High Constable and Undersheriff of North Riding of Yorkshire on Long Island. Author of "Newes from America", 1638.
Attorney for Matinecock Indians who gave him 150 acres near Oyster Bay, named "Killingworth" after his father’s birthplace, and where he lived and lies buried. His family were among the earliest Quakers. First wife Helena de Hooch, second wife Elizabeth Feake (her mother was Anya Seton’s heroine in The Winthrop Woman). Descendants spread up Hudson Valley to Vermont, across New York to Ohio, and throughout the West.

Charles H. Lyons, 70, retired employee of the Guernsey Works (sheet Mill) of the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corp. died Monday afternoon at 2:16 o'clock at his home, 540 Madison Avenue. His health had been failing the past two years and two weeks ago his condition became serious.
Mr. Lyons was born Nov. 23, 1867 and had been a resident of Cambridge the past 40 years. Several years ago he was retired on a pension from the sheet mill where he had been employed for many years.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Nettie Lyons, five sons, Earl C. and Roy B. Wyandotte, Mich., Fred H. Cambridge, James A. and Howard M. Lyons, Canton, two sisters, Mrs. Anna Whitaker, Barnesville, and Mrs. Mary White, Newark, one brother, Wilkinsburg, Pa and 11 grandchildren. Two sons are deceased.
The body was removed to the McMillen funeral home, South Tenth street, and was returned to the home Monday evening.
The Daily Jefferson 1938.
He was buried in 1938 in Northwood Cemetery, Cambridge, Guernsey Co., OH, Findagrave #73754465.
